[I’d like to preface this post by dedicating it fully to a good friend of mine, O, who tells me, every time she sees me, in no uncertain terms, that I do not blog enough. So, darling, here you go!]
Today is, really, my last free day before the start of the semester. A few hours of work training and a mad rush to skim hundreds of pages of philosophy for thesis research – that I absolutely should have been doing over the past 12 weeks but blew off to, instead, sleep and read copious amounts of unrelated, though arguably more compelling, fiction literature – awaits tomorrow, with classes beginning on Tuesday. So, I figured I’d spend it baking, since it’ll probably be a while until I have some time to do it again (my deepest regret, O).
If you know me from the old blog, you’ll know that I’ve attempted these things before. They weren’t totally perfect during my last attempt, but I wanted to
a) continue riding the Canadian high I’ve been enjoying since last week, and
b) raise them to my unnecessarily high expectations for culinary aesthetic perfection.
It resulted in a pretty commendable second attempt, if I do say so myself.
A good Fourth of July is spent the way you’d imagine it spent: in the company of good friends, good food, good conversation, and copious amounts of explosives. Lucky for me, being in Cville surrounded by none other than Zach, Michael, Jeremy, and the rest, it was bound to be quite an event.
When Zach sent me a hilariously applicable movie still of the first year Hogwarts students feasting at the Great Hall and told me, under no uncertain terms, to “prepare myself for dinner,” I knew it was going to be a good night.
Some mornings I wake up, totally determined to go to the gym, do some pilates, head off to work wide awake and cheery, spend the day getting my fix of fruits and veggies, and head to bed early for a full night’s sleep. They are wonderful days, to be sure, mostly spent reading in between work and interning with a cup of iced coffee and a mind totally at peace, well-fueled and clear.
(It may seem uncanny, but I actually genuinely enjoy being healthy.)
And then other days I wake up, go to the gym, do some pilates, head off to work wide awake and cheery, get home, flip straight to the Euro Cup, bake a pie, and crash down onto the couch to watch the game with my feet on the table and a bowl of leftover peanut butter filling in hand. Fruits and veggies be damned.
Today was one of those days.
